Juicy Gummy Snacks (The Healthier Version)

You may have read my recipe for Jello Gummy SnacksĀ and wondered about ways to make that yummy snack just a touch healthier for your kids. In my family, I have one child who is sensitive to red food dye, so right away using Jello can sometimes be a problem. These Juicy Gummies are a wonderful alternative to that snack and have just a few very simple ingredients. If you are looking for a gummy type snack without all the added “Yuck!” give these a try.

I will warn you that Juicy Gummies are not as sweet as my Jello Gummies, nor do they take on the bright colors that food coloring gives. But, you can adjust the amount of sweetness by adding more or less honey according to your children’s preferences. It’s easy to play with the recipe with different kinds of juices, and the result is a nice fruity sweetness without too much of a sugar buzz. When I make these, they are always a hit. You can also experiment with using fruit purees (and I will share a recipe for one of those gummy snacks soon!) to give an opaque gummy with a lot more body and nutritional value.

Fruit Juicy Gummy Snacks
These fruity gummies get their sweetness from fruit juice and honey. Amount of honey can be adjusted to suit your families sweetness. Any flavor of juice can be used easily. For this recipe we have used Grape, but have also experimented with others!

Instructions
  1. Prepare silicone molds by placing them on a baking sheet to protect surfaces from spills.
  2. Place 1/2 cup fruit juice in microwaveable dish (or heat on stovetop) and heat for 30 seconds or until just hot.
  3. Add honey and stir to combine.
  4. Slowly add gelatin and stir. If you add gelatin powder too quickly, the mixture will clump, so be sure to go slow and stir well. Mixture may foam slightly at top.
  5. Using medicine dropper, syringe, or spoon quickly fill molds with gelatin. If mixture is allowed to cool too much, it will begin to set up.
  6. Move tray of filled molds to refrigerator and allow to set up for 30 minutes. Once set, remove from molds and place on parchment lined sheet. Allow to cure on sheet in refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Length of time cured will lead to "bouncier" gummies. Once they have reached their desired "bounciness", store in sealed container in the Fridge.
Recipe Notes

Wash utensils and cooking pots immediately before the gelatin starts to set up. This makes for much easier clean up!

This recipe will impress your kids, and you can do a lot of things to make it even more fun. Choosing your molds is a great part of the fun and allows you to make just the right snacks for different kids! My boys love the Star Wars, Gummy Bear, and Lego molds I have used above, but you can find all kinds of different varieties online!

This is also a super project for kids to make with you! Have fun in the kitchen!
